GOODBYE TO A VERY DIFFICULT YEAR 2013!

The outbreaks occur primarily in remote villages in Central and West Africa, near tropical rainforests, and is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population.

Fruit bats of the Pteropodidae family are considered to be the natural host of the Ebola virus.

No specific treatment or vaccine is available for use by people or animals to cure this disease, EVD, formerly known as EBOLA haemorrhagic fever.

So please take care and avoid travelling to the areas affected at the moment.

Antidotes for Sarin attack

_{Last year's chemical attack in Damascus killed hundreds of people, most of whom, hiding in basements, thought they were safe from the bombs. However, Sarin vapour is heavier than air, therefore, they would have been safer on the top floors of their buildings or higher up in a tower.}

_{Thousands more people received a non-lethal dose, who are likely to suffer chronic neurological damage, long-term effects of restlessness, memory loss, cognitive impairment, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).}

_{There are two Sarin antidotes, Atropine or Pralidoxime, which if injected into muscle within hours, could save lives in severe cases, and could reduce neurological damage for those affected if injected within days after the attack.}_{As sarin attacks could wipe out whole families, survivors are often left with a profound sense of guilt, which can be debilitating.}

Countries wishing to help Syria's victims, should consider dropping antidotes with clear advice for their use, instead of bombs or any other attempts to destroy chemical stockpiles, as any kind of explosion would cause further contamination.

Alzheimer's Disease

A protein in spinal fluid could be used to predict the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, according to German researchers.

Patients with high levels of the chemical - soluble amyloid precursor protein beta - were more likely to develop the disease, they found.

Doctors said in the journal Neurology this was more precise than other tests.

Alzheimer's Research UK said early diagnosis was a key goal, and the study represented a potential new lead.Those who developed the illness had, on average, 1,200 nanograms/ml of the protein in the spinal fluid at the start of the study.The researchers said that a combination of soluble amyloid precursor protein beta, defective tau proteins, which are involved in the structure of brain cells, and a patient's age was 80% accurate in predicting the onset of the disease.
